Tips, Tricks, and Things I Wish I Knew Sooner
Share tips and things you've learned along the way to help out your up and coming kinmates! Some of mine:
Keybinds:
Delete selects nearby clickable objects, great for quests you have to find flowers or some such for. It can also be used to select fields while farming!
U will use the selected object. Open a chest or door, harvest a farm field, talk to an npc...
Ctrl+Click brings up the dressing room to see what an item looks like on your character, and allows you to check what the item looks like in different colors.
Ctrl+Right-click links an item in chat
Shift-drag allows you to split a stack of items
Skirmish Camp:
The skirmish camp has many useful items for barter with skirmish marks, including one-use recipe scrolls, reputation items and rep acceleration tomes, Legendary item symbols and scrolls (below level 100), and moor cowbells (okay that one's more fun than useful).
Crafting Guilds:
Crafting guild recipes produce the critical result of one-use recipes (some of which require faction reputation to get), plus the ability to craft Legendary Items, to craft (barter items for) crafted LI relics, and a few guild exclusive recipes on top of that. You can join up to two on a character, but you will need to unlock guild access in the LP store or go VIP to advance beyond a certain point.
Riding:
A basic riding skill (per character) is available in the LP store for 95 LP, after that you can get a horse at Hengstacer farms north of bree, or barter for one during festivals, or buy one from many reputation factions around middle earth. Shift-C will bring up a panel in which you can see all the mounts availiable, and emotes and pets too. VIPs can go to Hengstacer farms at level 20 and do a quest for the riding skill. Additionally, altoholics may want to invest in an account riding skill ;)
Getting LP:
If you have the money to spend on LOTRO Points, great, support the game! If not, deeds are key to earning Lotro points in game. I'd be happy to show you how you can earn them by the hundreds (call me crazy but I do actually enjoy deeding). FYI these are also called TP (Turbine Points) by players who have been around a while.
How to fix the chat:
Right click a chat tab, a menu will pop up with options to create new tabs, rename the tab you clicked, and adjust filters for what you want to show in the tab you clicked.
Now, in options...
you can change the color of the chat:
And how dark you want the chat background to be with the chat window opacity slider:

Alt+R brings up a panel from which you can filter loot and other things
Shift+C brings up the collections panel in which you can view (and preview) all available pets, mounts, and emotes, and see which ones you have and are missing.
Also, this handy little button brings up a search bar for vendors!
In dark places like Moria, there are a few settings you can adjust to help yourself see better:
Personal recommendations for LP purchases for new and free players:
1. Riding skill and Premium wallet (recommend this over the cheaper version, barter items multiply later in the game)
2. Expansions (More content, more opportunities to earn LP, etc) If you are willing/able to spend a little real money on the game, the Quad pack from the LOTRO Market is a great deal!
3. Storage... shared storage, vault space, wardrobe, inventory space, carryalls...
4. Miscellaneous, Cosmetics, and other fun stuff
Keep an eye on weekly and holiday sales, you can get some good deals if you're willing to wait for them :)
Additionally for those who can afford it, I do consider VIP to be worth the investment, whether you just do a one-time VIP purchase (many benefits remain after it expires), or maintain the subscription.
